I was born in Thornbury in 1976 and I’ve lived here for 50 years. You can walk from Dundas Street up to Darebin Road and pass everything you need on the way. That means bakeries, greengrocers, cafes, bars, restaurants, schools, accountants and a servo. That’s why it’s my favourite place in the world, and it’s why I know which streets are worth your money.
Thornbury Village
The heart of the suburb is the corner of High Street and Normanby Avenue. Psarakos Market is there, the old BizBuzz Hardware site is now apartments, and Browns Motors is just down the road. Thornbury Bowls Club sits on Normanby Avenue and backs onto Ballantyne Street, between High Street and the train line.
West Thornbury
The roundabout at Gilbert Road and Miller Street is a village of its own, with cafes, a few bars and old-school butchers still trading. West of St Georges Road there are plenty of homes dating back to the 1940s and 50s.
Between High Street and Station Street
The streets around Albert Street are quiet and residential, with a good spread of older-style apartment blocks.
East to Darebin Creek
Head along Dundas Street and you’ll pass Thornbury High School before the light industrial strip that runs down to the creek.
